DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT

November 17th, 2008

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Today I had my faith tested. I got ready this morning to go downtown to run several errands for our ministry, but when I started the car, the car wouldn’t start. I tried a few more times but to no avail. We brought in 2 different mechanics to look at it, but no success. I could tell I was feeling disappointed and so I went back into the house to pray, but as I was praying I could tell my mind wasn’t with me. My mind was thinking about why the car wouldn’t start, who I need to call to look at it, how will I accomplish my tasks today, etc, etc. Have you ever been there? I admit I was disappointed and I also knew that staying disappointed wasn’t going to make the car start. So, what was my remedy? I remembered the teaching I did last year on the power of thanksgiving and how that positions us to redeem the time. Immediately I knew I had to change my strategy. I stopped praying about the car and I simply worshiped God and gave Him thanks. Within seconds, the peace of God flooded my being and I knew everything was going to be okay. So, the next time your car doesn’t start, or the next time you have a bad day, don’t pray about the issue instead redeem the time by worshiping God and giving Him thanks. Also, to all you ministers of God’s word, be careful what you teach, you might just be tested by your own medicine. By the way, I found out what’s wrong with the car. The alarm system has an electrical fault and has shut the engine down. It’s fixable. My prayer is that we would all develop hearts of thanksgiving even as we draw near to Thanksgiving holiday. God bless you!

A BROKEN HEART

November 14th, 2008

Text: Proverbs 13:12

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.”

Today I want to talk to you about a sick heart. Have you ever had a sick heart? Now, I’m not talking about physical sickness, but spiritual and emotional sickness. I’m talking about that feeling you go through because of betrayal, disappointment, and failed dreams. I’m talking about that feeling that makes your heart ache physically and you can’t sleep nor think straight. I sense by the Spirit of God there are people right now going through sickness of the heart. Someone is heart sick because someone you trusted and respected you has disappointed you. Another person is heart sick because he/she didn’t get the position they applied for. And still another person is heart sick because of a failed relationship. Regardless of what’s causing you to be heart sick I have good news for you. The Bible in Psalm 34:18 says this: “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” God is near (beside you, with you, and for you) and in control over that situation that has caused you to be heart broken. Here is what I’m praying for you: that you would stand in the wonderful of God’s love. God’s love is peace, gentle, and caring. May His love set your heart free!

SEASON OF THE LORD

November 11th, 2008

Text: Exodus 1:7

“But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.”

Today marks the end of one season and the beginning of a new season for GDM, our friends, and partners. This season is called the Season of the Lord. We are being shifted from our past into our future. Our past is characterized by things like agony, failure, abject poverty, and death. Our future however is being defined by things like prosperity, strength, character, and abundant life. The children of Israel had such an experience; their past was capitalized by hard bondage, famine, and fear, but their future was capitalized by freedom, fruitfulness, and favor. This season of the Lord is defined by 4 elements: (1) Fruitfulness, (2) Increased abundance, (3) Multiplication, and (4) Exceeding growth. I want to encourage you to be expectant of these 4 elements to break out into your life. Whether your life is business, ministry, relationship, or finances be expectant that something is going to happen on any of these 4 elements. You are entitled to these elements because I sought the Lord on our behalf for these elements to manifest. You might face a few enemies (fear, compromise, doubt, etc) on the way, but be of good courage for God is your STRENGTH. In fact, the Bible says the more the afflicted them (Israel) the more they grew and multiplied (Exodus 1:12). You are not going to have a breakdown, but a breakthrough. Your test is about to become your testimony. And your mess is about to become your message. Breakthrough is on the way!

A HOSPITAL BURDEN

November 7th, 2008

Text: Matthew 25:36

“I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.”

Today a pastor friend of mine asked me to go along with him to the hospital to see one of his church members who has been hospitalized due to Malaria Meningitis. What I saw shocked me to say the least. I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing. In fact, as we walked from one ward to the next I was filled with mixed emotions. One moment I wanted to cry and the next moment I felt like throwing up. The odor coming from the wards was offensive and the sight was unbearable. I saw patients sleeping on the floor because there were no beds available, and those who were on beds the mattresses were less than 2 inches thick. The sanitation was terrible. The care was disappointing. As I stood in one ward trying to reconcile with what my eyes were seeing a burden was conceived. I don’t know what God is going to have me to do, but I’m determined to make a difference at this hospital. I might start with visitations primarily to pray and encourage those who are hopeless. I’ll then start buying groceries and food to bless those with no family, or those who have family but can’t afford. I can’t live comfortably in my house while others are suffering and dying. I now understand why God allowed me to do Pre-Med and work as a health care worker. It was all part of preparation. So why am I sharing this? Two reasons…first, pray they grant me a permit to minister in this hospital both to the care givers as well as to the care receivers. Second, pray God shows me exactly what I must do to plead the cause of the sick. Thank you friends and partners for believing in me and in the vision God has given me which is: to heal hopeless hearts and bless the broken.

REVIVING DEAD THINGS: FAITH

November 6th, 2008

Text: 1 Kings 17:24

“Then the woman said to Elijah, ‘Now by this I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth’.”

As I conclude on this series on “Reviving Dead Things”, I want you to notice what the widow said to Elijah. Look at the text. God had just used Elijah to work a miracle of provision for months in this widow’s life, but yet she didn’t really believe Elijah was a man of God. Because there was room for doubt in her life about Elijah, God allowed her to lose her son so He would prove to her Elijah was a man of God. You see friends, sometimes God will allow certain things to happen in our lives because there is still doubt in our lives, and God seizes those moments to train us so we can come to a point of faith. One example of this is the story of Peter walking on the water and later on sinking in the water he was walking on (Matthew 14:22-33). Jesus seized the opportunity of Peter’s sinking to reveal to him that he had little faith. Just like Elijah prayed and the widow’s son was brought back to life, so Jesus saved Peter from drowning. This widow should have developed faith through the provision wrought through Elijah, but because she was calloused to the truth, God allowed her to experience death and resurrection to bring her to a place of faith. There are two things we need to learn from this message: first, we need to learn and develop faith through the things we’re presently going through. Don’t wait for death or a sinking experience happen before you learn faith. Second, the next time you go through a death or sinking experience, don’t despair nor let yourself be robbed of the opportunity for God to work a miracle in your life. God knows exactly where you are and what you need. He will send His servant to minister to that dead area in your life, or He will personally reach out His hand and save you from your sinking. Because God is in control dead things are going to be revived. Revival! Revival! Revival!

REVIVING DEAD THINGS: YOUR SON LIVES!

November 5th, 2008

Text: 1 Kings 17:23

“And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, ‘see, your son lives!’”

I love the latter part of this scripture where Elijah says, ‘see, your son lives!’ Do you know how many people would love to hear these words spoken to them? There is a mother somewhere right now who has just lost a son to drugs; another mother has lost a son to a disease; still another to hunger. Do you know how much these mothers would treasure to hear the words, ‘see, your son lives!’? Life is a gift from God and every day we need to live with a sense of thanksgiving for the life we live. I can imagine how this widow must have felt after she saw her son alive again. Can you imagine how everything in her world must have changed from that moment on? Imagine with me how she must have lived carefully and paid careful attention to the minutest details of her son’s life. What is really remarkable about this story is the fact that the widow’s son came back to life because someone cared enough to take the time and pray for the restoration of her son. I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have cared enough for me and taken the time to pray for me in my private weak moments. There have been times in my Christian walk I’ve secretly got discouraged and my first love grown cold, but yet, there were people out there—the “Elijahs” who prayed for me in their upper rooms for God to resuscitate my first love. I know what it’s like to lose your drive for God because of circumstances beyond your control, and then have the drive back. I know just how this widow must have felt losing her son and then having him back. I know most of you reading this blog can attest to the fact that at one point in your life you’ve lost something/someone valuable and how getting it/them back changed your world. I’m praying that we would all experience the joy of restoration of dead things. I pray Elijah’s words to the widow become a reality in our lives: ‘see, your son, marriage, dream, or church lives!’

REVIVING DEAD THINGS: ANSWERED PRAYER

November 4th, 2008

1 Kings 17:22

“Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.”

What a relief to know we serve a God who hears our voice! Prayer was meant to be answered, and so we can trust God that when we cry out to Him, He will answer us. Elijah cried out to God and God answered him. Because Elijah called upon the Lord the soul of the child came back to him. What are you believing God for? Does your situation seem too far far-fetched? Why don’t you cry out to God and let Him hear your voice? God wants to hear your voice and bring back to life that situation that’s dead. Maybe that situation is your personal life, or a friendship that meant so much to you. Whatever it is—TRUST God! Allow the Holy Spirit to show you which areas of your life you need revived, and then start praying and trusting God to bring them back to life. I’ve already identified one area in my life that’s dead and need revived. I know it’s not easy and that’s why I’m going to have to trust God. Am I afraid? Off course. Do I need to stretch myself out on it? Definitely. But, I’m willing to do whatever it takes for this area of my life to get revived. Elijah did it and so can I. Join with me and let’s pray for revival of friendships, relationships, marriages, businesses, and dreams and visions. May God hear your voice today!

REVIVING DEAD THINGS: SPEAK!

November 3rd, 2008

Text: 1 Kings 17:21

“And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him’.”

I have always lived by the principle that simply says, “Nothing happens in the Kingdom until something is said.” Elijah knew very well that just stretching himself out on the child would not bring him back to life, but what he was going to speak was what was going to bring the child’s soul back. Everything in life hinges on what we say or on what we don’t say. You and I are the sum total of what we say or don’t say. The cardinal thing to take note of in our text above is that it is not the quantity of words you speak, but the quality of the words you speak. The quality of your words only comes in play when there is a corresponding action. For Elijah it was stretching himself out on the child. What about you? Have you backed up your words with action or are you simply speaking out words with no action? In John 11, Jesus called Lazarus to come forth, but He also told His disciples to roll away the stone. My challenge to you today is this: if you desire to see dead things come back to life in your world make sure you’re speaking words of life and are taking corresponding action. Speak what God is speaking and you will see what God sees. Here is a wonderful scripture you need to keep in mind as you navigate through the vicissitudes of life: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21. May your tongue be a life-giver…

REVIVING DEAD THINGS: THREE TIMES

November 2nd, 2008

Text: 1 Kings 17:21

“And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him’.”

Three times Elijah stretched himself out on the child. But why 3 times? I have 3 schools of thought. First, Elijah stretching himself out 3 times represents “bull-dog faith”—faith that locks in and won’t let go until something happens. I, like most Christians easily give up on certain things on my first trial. But this story is teaching me not just to stretch myself once, but 3 times. Sometimes you might have to stretch yourself out 7, 10, or 12 times before the miracle can happen. My second school of thought is Elijah had to stretch himself out 3 times to revive spirit, soul, and body. God is not one who does partial jobs, but on the contrary, He saves to the uttermost. Finally, my third school of thought is that Elijah stretching himself out represents stages or levels of healing. The first stretch might be identifying the problem, the second stretch might be confronting the problem, and the third stretch might be conquering the problem. Since we are all at different stages of life with varied problems, I urge you to apply this word to that area of your life this message applies to the most, and watch God perform a miracle for you. God loves you!

REVIVING DEAD THINGS: STRETCH

November 1st, 2008

Text: 1 Kings 17:21

“And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him’.”

Can you imagine Elijah stretching himself on a dead corpse? This reminds me of a similar story that took place in 2 Kings 4:32-37 about Elisha and the Shunammite’s son who was dead but was brought back to life. Just like Elijah stretched himself on the widow’s son so did Elisha on the Shunammite’s son. In both cases they had to stretch themselves on dead corpses and believe God for a miracle. You see; when something really matters to you, it doesn’t matter how bad the situation is, or how stinking the marriage is, you just have to lay on it and believe God for a miracle. Elijah stretched himself out on the child 3 times and prayed a short prayer and the miracle happened. I dare you to stretch yourself out on that dead situation you so desire to live, and cry out to God and watch Him work a miracle. I’m praying with you to have preposterous faith to stretch out yourself on dead things and have them come back to life. God bless ya!
